Back in August 2025, The Baltimore Chronicle reported:

US President Donald Trump stated that according to American sources, Russia has lost more than 112,000 military personnel since the beginning of the year in the war against Ukraine...

Trump also shared data on Ukrainian military losses, stating that approximately 8,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died since the beginning of the year.

This means that Russia is losing 14 times as many men as Ukraine, which hardly seems credible, especially as most actions this year on the Donbass front are small unit actions to take villages or drone strikes on armoured vehicles or dugouts and not major offensives like the Somme in World War One let alone those on the Ostfront in WW2.

But this does play into the well-established trope that Russia doesn't care about the lives of its own troops and is happy to see them slaughtered.

Previously, he only mentioned that both countries are losing about 5,000 soldiers every day.

To put these losses in context, Wikipedia claims:

During the Battle of Stalingrad, average daily losses for the Soviet Union were estimated to be around 1,000 to 1,500 soldiers, while German losses were approximately 500 to 1,000 soldiers per day.

Meanwhile, other outlets - like Yahoo for instance - reported the 5000 a day figure as 5000 a week based on Trump's Truth Social post.

After the deadliest attack on Kyiv since last summer killed 13 civilians, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to lose patience with Russia, posting on social media, “Vladimir, Stop! 5,000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the peace deal done!”

This 5000 number seems remarkably close to those of average British losses of 5000 a day on the Western Front in WW1 as tallied by Dr. David Payne:

There is an interesting discussion of this topic from February 2025 on the Ukrianian Kyiv Independent:

So where is Trump getting these casualty figures coming from? WW1? Wikipedia? The tooth fairy?

Meanwhile Warren Thornton reports:

From our friends inside Ukraine we have the death toll for just the one oblast for the month of July 2025. We have reported that 1,8m men have died fighting for NATO and America inside Ukraine, that is an average of 1,638 dead per day for Ukraine. Compared to Russia losing on average 100 men per day throughout the length of the conflict. The west, of course, do not want this known. In just Luhansk alone, Ukraine have lost 19,877 men in the month of July. That is 641 soldiers a day and that is in ONE oblast. It's a NATO/USA genocide of the Ukrainian people.
