While the MSM has got into a major lather about the Trump Signal leak, it now emerges that there has been a leak of a different kind in the UK - a bin bag stuffed with the details of British servicemen and operations at Catterick garrison, the largest in the British Army.
Sky News reports:
An investigation has been launched after "sensitive" documents relating to a military garrison in Newcastle were found by a passer-by.
Actually Catterick garrison is not 'in Newcastle', it's in North Yorkshire but this is Sky News - so give them a break.
The BBC reported that they include details about soldiers' ranks, shift patterns, email addresses, weapon issue records and access information for military facilities.
Mike Gibbard, a football fan from Gateshead, found the bin-bag contents:
"Details of the perimeter, the patrol, checking weapons in and out, requests for leave, mobile phone numbers, high-ranking officers," he told the BBC.
"This shouldn't be here, anyone could pick it up."
Including Bulgarian spies or anyone, for that matter, who fancies a little military blackmail - although this stuff is not easy to sell down the local pub.
No doubt the Russians will soon be blamed for managing to supply the garrison with cheap bin-bags.
But just to be serious for a moment. This is not information about bombing nameless people in far-off places but details about actual people serving at a major military base just down the A1 from Newcastle. This could put these peoples' lives in real danger.
Oh dear.
Apparently no-one has heard of a thing called a shredder. Or maybe the bin-bag was on its way to be shredded and fell off the back of a 3-tonner. Or maybe it's all Russian disinformation anyway.
BTW - The Royal Corps of Signals (motto: Certa Cito) has been associated with Catterick for over 100 years.
Let's hope the MoD's investigation of this communications disaster is both 'Certa' and 'Cito'.
