The New York Times (NYT) has published a new assessment of the US involvement in the Ukraine that essentially admits what many people either knew or guessed who have been following this since 2013 or before. According to the Deccan Herald:

A New York Times investigation reveals that the United States' involvement in the war was far deeper that previously understood. The secret partnership both guided big-picture battle strategy and funneled precise targeting information down to Ukrainian soldiers in the field.

Apparently this was all a surprise to the NYT - as if - but now they understand that the game is over they have clearly decided a little more balance is required in their coverage.
Apart from the Pentagon's 'remarkable transparency' relating to their 'public accounting of the $66.5 billion in weaponry it has supplied to Ukraine', some key takeaways from the NYT's 'investigation' include:
- the US base at Wiesbaden, Germany had a key role to play in setting targeting priorities
- the Biden administration kept moving its red lines as it tested how far it could go to provoke Russia
- the US military and CIA were allowed to help with strikes into Russia including supporting an 'ops box' over Russian territory
This NYT report is a major repudiation of many false narratives about the war such as that it is not a proxy war, the West did not prolong it and the Ukrainian forces have humbled Russian forces unaided.
Without the 'secret partnership' between the USA and the Ukraine, the war would have been over in weeks and there would have been a lot less military and civilian casualties.
But with the partnership, the fiction could be maintained that Ukrainian military might was defeating Russian troops and sinking ships, but most of all that Putin was a loser for invading in the first place.
And the US military could battle-test lots of modern weaponry and learn a lot about fighting a 'peer' enemy, something it hasn't done since Korea, without any casualties of its own.
Now it's all unravelling, like Rapunzel's hair, as the truth becomes known - one plait at a time.
Expect many more such 'revelations' to come.
