Following a review by world-leading experts, it has been concluded that Da Vinci's Mona Lisa has been hanging the wrong way up.

A spokesperson told FNN:

For centuries we have assumed that the Mona Lisa is a portrait of a sitting woman comfortably with an enigmatic smile.

But in fact it is a portrait of a woman balancing on her head, rather like a Renaissance break dancer or some bizarre artwork from Monty Python.

So the portrait has been hung upside down. But if you have a copy or a poster or whatever of the masterpiece, this error is easy to correct by simply turning it the other way up. Voila!

The art world is in shock as now it is expected that many of the world's most famous paintings will have to be re-evaluated. For example who knows which way to hang a Mondrian or a Jackson Pollock? It's a mystery.
