Scientists have discovered a number of new species of hedgehog that include:
- a hedgehog with no spines
- a hedgehog with two legs longer than the other two that only lives in hilly terrain
- a flat hedgehog
The hedgehog with no spines was previously through to be a species of rat until it became clear that it rolled in a ball as a defence mechnism.
The hilly hedgehog was previously thought to be a haggis by Scots people but is now confirmed as distinct species that specializes in contouring.
The flat hedgehog is especially interesting as it has evolved to live around motorways and is immune to being squashed by cars due to its shape and tiny retractable legs. It looks a bit like a spiky pancake.
