The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports:

The Russian Military Moves That Have Europe on Edge

Putin is expanding bases and preparing to move more troops to European border regions far from Ukraine; ‘we’re expecting some conflict with NATO’.

The WSJ seems surprised that Russia is bolstering border forces around Finland - something that is putting Europe 'on edge'.

Finland, that has had a peaceful border with Russia for decades, suddenly decided to join NATO, up its defence spending and build a new railway eventually linking Finland to Sweden and Norway because it believes the war in Ukraine means Russia was now a threat to Finland.

According to MENAFN:

In a November interview, Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Lulu Ranne, emphasized the need for the railway to transport military vehicles, such as tanks and cannons, swiftly in any situation. A recent NATO update also noted efforts to integrate Finland and Sweden into NATO’s defense structures, including an increased presence in Finland.

Is it any surprise then that: In response, Russia has pledged to strengthen its defense in the northwestern region.

No surprise at all really.

So why are Europeans on edge when they are getting what they wished for?

Imagine if Mexico joined a military alliance with China. On a purely defensive basis you understand.

Would the WSJ be surprised if the USA moved military resources to its southern border?

I think we all know the answer to that question.
