Swearing Improves Strength Through State Disinhibition
Swearing, often dismissed as socially inappropriate, has been linked to increased physical performance. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. One proposed explanation is state disinhibition, a psychological state in which individuals are less likely to restrain their behavior.
Public Significance Statement
In many situations we hold ourselves back and, in doing so, limit our opportunities for success. Here we propose swearing as a cheap, readily available intervention that appears to encourage us to “not hold back” and instead to “go for it” a little more, with positive benefits on physical performance. This study shows that swearing can improve physical performance, and it works by helping people feel focused, confident, and less distracted.
Anyone who has watched stand-up comedians like Bernard Manning, Chubby Brown or Jethro in action will recognize 'state disinhibition' at work.
But it's handy to have academic validation for swearing next time you go on a rant at the office.
So don't hold back. Give it all you've got.
