News that Thales Glasgow has won a £169m contract to build periscopes for the Royal Navy's Dreadnought submarines, caused FNN to wonder: Aren't periscopes redundant in the drone age?
We asked the opinion of former Australian submariner Bill "Kursk" Heslop, who told FNN:
Enemy drones could easily spot a periscope above the waves, then zoom down and stick an eye patch over it to render it useless.
In any case, subs will soon be equipped with their own waterproof drones housed in a "kennel" on the conning tower so they can launch from under the surface to zoom up and provide the eyes and ears of the sub.
Still, it keeps them busy on the Clyde.
Hey Muriel! Fetch me a tinnie. I'm parched.
