As the UK's covid cases rise again and more people have the NHS Test and Trace (TnT) app on their phone that determines of they have been in close contact with a verified positive covid case, the TnT app has triggered an explosion of 'pings' resulting in a 'pingdemic'.
FNN has learned that users of the TnT app have not only received pings from the app to self-isolate for 10 days but they have also received pings from:
- supermarkets offering grocery delivery slots
- covid test providers offering test dates for a reassuring PCR test
- Amazon to recommend books and DVD box-sets to occupy people during self-isolation
- massage therapists offering Indian head massages to relieve stress
- Various exotic ladies and gentlemen offering personal 'french lessons' via discreet 'home visits'
A TnT spokesperson told FNN:
These 'commercial' pings are part of what the app was designed to do and anyone who signed up for the app agreed to receive these commercial solicitations, as stated in section R.4.56.89 of the terms and conditions.
All these pings and the responses to them are also shared with Facebook and Google in order to update users' personal profiles on these services without their explicit consent. This sharing of data enables us to recoup some of the £31 billion pound investment in the service.
