Following a Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) report that Britons owed over £14 billion in May 2023, the Goverment is rumoured to be considering an amendment to the Modern Slavery Act to include debt slavery.
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation works to support and speed up the transition to a more equitable and just future, free from poverty, in which people and planet can flourish.
To remind FNN readers about the Act:
The Modern Slavery Act will give law enforcement the tools to fight modern slavery, ensure perpetrators can receive suitably severe punishments for these appalling crimes and enhance support and protection for victims. It received Royal Assent on Thursday 26 March 2015.
Debt slavery is another form of slavery that echoes feudal times when rural peasants were permanently in debt to their 'masters' and therefore under their control.
In this case, it is financial institutions that are enslaving the populace, with the whip being variable interest rates. Once we become a cashless society and rely only trackable digital currencies then the enslavement will be complete.
The Government needs to go after these financial 'gangmasters' before we are all trapped in debt slavery.
