The ISS has recently had a new array of solar panels installed by astronauts.
Unlike solar panels installed on the island of Cyprus, where inspection and approval from the local electricity company can delay commissioning by six months or more, these panels will work immediately unless prevented by Russian hackers.
An ISS spokesperson told FNN:
We are pleased that the new solar panels will end the dependence of the ISS on electricity by wire. The cable to connect the ISS to its terrestrial electricity plant was starting to fray and becoming a security hazard for aircraft, satellites and drones.
Now we can cut the cable. Assuming that is, that the untethered ISS won't just hurtle off into outer space and incinerate everyone on board.
