The venerable plastic food container brand, Tupperware, has declared bankrupcy.
The brand was found by Alf Tupper, an East-End sprinter famous for his reliance on fish and chips for fuelling his athletic endeavours. Alf invented the brand after he used a plastic box to store his fish and chips in when he went to the race track.
Tupperware parties were famous in the 1960s and 70s with the 'swinging set'.
Couples brought a piece of Tupperware and placed it on a kitchen table. Men then chose a random piece of Tupperware from the pile and sloped off with the owner who was invariably a swish suburban housewife with batwing glasses and a playtex girdle, looking for some action.
Tupperware came under increasing competition from cheaper Chinese brands like Dong-Dongware and more sustainable brands that made their products from bamboo.
EU spokesperson Ursula Von Richthofen told FNN:
I fondly remember such parties when I was a girl in Wuppertal.
Here in Germany, Tupperware was branded 'Schtuppenwaren' and I can tell you...there was a lot of Schtupping going on at those parties!
