The UK government announces it is to overhaul the vetting process after the scale of the Mandelson scandal became clear following the release of his vetting files.
Of course, the ineptitude of the vetting process is shocking and begs the question of whether AI could do a better job.
But what is equally important is how many other people are holding top state posts based on the same vetting process - the head of MI6 for example?
Mandelson got caught out but how many others are hiding behind a vetting process that was not fit for purpose?
This should also be a focus of government efforts to re-establish trust in the vetting process.
