Dev Shah (14) became the 22nd South Asian winner of the Scripps US National Spelling Bee Contest, after he successfully spelt the name of a Welsh railway station:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Mr Shah asked for the word to be used in a sentence and the example given was:

What time is the next train to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch?

A silly question because as everyone knows, all railways in the UK are on strike, so good luck getting anywhere by rail.

Mr Shah admitted to having an advantage over his fellow contestant Charlotte Walsh as he is both a trainspotter and watches a Welsh rugby channel on satellite TV.
