While the US ICE gets all the negative publicity, Sky News reports that the UK is also doing its bit to uncover illegal working:

Huge rise in raids on salons and takeaways revealed in illegal working crackdown

More than 11,000 immigration raids on takeaways, beauty salons, and car washes have been carried out over the past year, new figures reveal, as the government accelerates its crackdown on illegal working.

The number of operations between October 2024 and September 2025 is a 51% increase on the year before, amid concerns about how many people are working illegally in the gig economy.

So this is an indication of where all the jobs are coming from in the UK's gig economy - the economy that is growing that is - and who is filling them.

And that doesn't include prostitution or other below-the-radar pursuits.

The issue came to a head earlier this year when shadow home secretary Chris Philp made an unannounced visit to an asylum hotel where he said he found "clear evidence of illegal working for Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats".

You have to hand it to the Tories.

In opposition, senior politicians like Jenrick and Philp have become effective investigative journalists pursuing social justice on the streets by highlighting fare dodgers at tube stations and illegal delivery drivers at asylum hotels.

Next up, a visit by the shadow health secretary to a shady massage parlour for a 'back, sack and crack' with a 'happy ending'.

There have been reports that asylum seekers can rent legitimate delivery driver accounts within hours of arriving in the country - skipping employment legality checks.

So it's off the boat, check-in to a hotel and start delivering takeaway dinners to welcoming Brits, in between hand-washing cars and providing pedicures or haircuts.

Uber Eats, Deliveroo, and Just Eat have previously told Sky News they are continuing to strengthen the technology they use to remove anyone working illegally.

Good luck with that.
