Given all the hoo-hah in the world of Theatre over historical figures being re-presented as persons of color or non-binary, The Globe Theatre in London has decided to push the envelope one step further by casting a Kangaroo to play the lead role of Joan of Arc in its new play.
The decision has prompted outrage from animal rights activists and of course, the French, who wanted a snail. But The Globe is unrepentant.
A spokesperson for The Globe told FNN:
The purpose of theatre is to disrupt conventional thinking. To ask the question: What if Joan of Arc was a Kangaroo? How would that have changed things?
We think that our casting of 'Skippy' (the bush kangaroo) will make a great Joan of Arc and we look forward to some juicy steaks after it is burned at the stake. Just kidding...we don't have a license to serve steaks at The Globe.
Kangaroo-trainer Bill 'Battler' Heslop told FNN:
I never did care for that uppity French bint so what's the harm in her being portrayed by Skippy? Hey Muriel! Fetch me a tinny. I'm parched!
EU spokesperson Ursula Von Richthofen commented:
Here at the EU we commend The Globe for its progressive stance on casting lead roles.
The German version of Joan of Arc will feature a giant talking bratwurst in the lead role and we will look forward to adding curry sauce when it is burnt at the stake at the end of each performance. Vorsprung durch Teknik!
