New Republic reports:
Nonfiction Publishing, Under Threat, Is More Important Than Ever
Cuts in publishing and book reviewing imperil the future of narrative nonfiction, and our understanding of the world around us.
AI is hardly mentioned in this long article.
The real threat to non-fiction writing is AI that can already churn out non-fiction books in minutes or hours - especially 'Introduction to...' titles.
AI itself will tell you that non-fiction writing is largely doomed as 'commodity' titles can be written by AI and only 'premium' titles will need to be written by humans.
This will also mean that 99% of non-fiction writers will be out of work but the 1% 'elite' will make a lot more money.
Just like everything else in other words.
